Oklahoma is known by many as one of the best places to live in the United States. Movies, plays, and songs have been written and composed which reflect the legendary strength and commitment Oklahomans have to our state and each other. These characteristics include the founding of the state by adventurous risk takers, evolving character based on doing the right thing, businesses built with second to none entrepreneurialism, and the choice to welcome all who visit our state with open arms and a genuine smile.
Today, regarless of the rich history of Oklahoma, we are facing a silent state-wide epidemic that must be addressed and made a priority by all of us, for all of us. Like the founding fathers of our state and leaders who made Oklahoma their priority for over one hundred years, we must make changing our health profile OUR collective priority. By almost every study, Oklahoman's health, wellness, and fitness is ranked as one of the poorest in the nation.
Obesity rates are rising in our state faster than almost every other state. Just a few years ago we were not in the top 10 most obese states. Now we are number 6 in the nation. Oklahoma City as been ranked as the least active city in the United States. Over 300,000 children, OUR children, are considered obese. State health leaders have stated that if we were just average in our health profile that over 5,000 Oklahoman's would be saved each year.
